WINNER 2008 HIA NSW CSR Home of the Year

The latest project of North Coast Design and Construct firm Vista Architects, located on an elevated block with sweeping rural and hinterland views of Lennox Head, is this year’s HIA NSW Home of the Year.

Combined with an extensive use of fully glazed external walls and expansive decks, the strongly expressed hardwood post and beam mainframe gives the house the opportunity to embrace the classic indoor/outdoor concept, which so exquisitely suits the coastal lifestyle.

Internal spaces open up to the large covered deck areas with a lap pool and a variety of garden enclosures, allowing the house to truly relate to its environment. Simple, uncluttered internal spaces with clean lines and contours are a feature of the house, with the internal composition of lofted and flat ceilings generating a variety of unique spatial characters and elemental qualities. The pavilion concept used here allows the house to be an assembly of linked buildings housing bedroom wings and studio spaces, planned so as to exploit the site’s features and suit the client’s various family and business needs.

This house consists of a main pavilion linked by a glazed conservatory link to a smaller pavilion accommodating an open plan studio, the master bedroom and ensuite.

The ‘living deck’ idea, where covered decks between pavilions become extensions of the adjacent rooms, are used as outdoor dining areas and living rooms for the main pavilions.

Apart from the expressed structural timber frame both internally and externally, the project exploits the colour, warmth and durability of timber in the polished ‘Forest Red Gum’ hardwood floors, ‘Jarrah’ for the solid framed kitchen and ‘Syrian Red Cedar’ windows and doors.

There has been great consideration of solar design principles, with consistent shading of glazed openings, high level ventilation, high-tech insulation within the roof, walls and floor, and of course favourable orientation of the house for sun control.

The deliberate use of clear-coated timbers and Colorbond steel refer directly to the classic Australian house style, while the house also borrows extensively from the Asian built forms. The floating roof concept allows high level air flow and light penetration into the building, very much reminiscent of the open pavilions of Indonesia.
